Voters in Wisconsin will decide the ideological majority of the state Supreme Court on Tuesday after a record-setting spending bonanza from backers of conservative candidate Brad Schimel and liberal candidate Susan Crawford.
Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. local time in the race billed as one that could determine control of the U.S. House of Representatives as Democrats are expected to challenge congressional maps if Crawford wins. The $90 million spent on the race is about $40 million more than the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court race, which was the previous record holder for the most expensive state judicial race in history.
Wisconsinites will also be voting on an amendment that, if approved, would add a voter identification requirement to the state constitution, strengthening the voter ID policy that is already part of state law.
President Donald Trump urged his supporters to get out and vote for the voter ID amendment and Schimel.
“There is a very important Referendum (Question 1) on the Ballot to amend the State Constitution to require VOTER ID. This, and other Election Integrity measures, including banning Drop Boxes, and Same Day Voting with Paper Ballots, can only happen if you GET OUT AND VOTE TODAY,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday.
“For State Supreme Court, make sure to Vote for America First Patriot, Brad Schimel, against Susan Crawford, a Radical Left Liberal, with a History of letting child molesters and rapists off easy. She will be one of the most Liberal Judges ever elected, which would be a DISASTER for Wisconsin and, the United States of America,” he added.
Already, 644,800 absentee ballots were cast during early voting throughout the state, WiscPolitics reported. About 31.9% of these ballots were cast in the liberal strongholds of Dane and Milwaukee counties, while the traditionally Republican-leaning “WOW” counties of Washington, Ozaukee, and Waukesha made up about 19%.
Schimel has been backed heavily by Elon Musk, whose America PAC has spent millions on the race, while Crawford has been supported by Democrat donors like George Soros. Musk appeared in Green Bay on Sunday, where he handed out $1 million checks to two Wisconsin voters who had signed a petition circulated by his PAC to oppose “activist judges.”
“What’s happening on Tuesday is a vote for which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives. That is why it is so significant. And whichever party controls the House, to a significant degree controls the country, which then steers the course of Western Civilization,” Musk said.
Many Democrats have been thinking the same thing, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
“There are gerrymandered congressional lines right now in Wisconsin,” Jeffries said earlier this month. “As soon as possible, we need to be able to revisit that and have fair lines. The only way for that to be even a significant possibility is if you have an enlightened Supreme Court.”
Polls in Wisconsin close at 8:00 p.m. local time. While the state’s last Supreme Court race was called within a couple of hours of the polls closing, the 2024 presidential race in Wisconsin wasn’t called until early morning the following day.
