“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough lashed out on Tuesday because his show was removed from the MSNBC lineup the previous day following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and as the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee got underway.

Sitting next to his wife and co-host, Mika Brzezinski, Scarborough tore into his own network after a CNN source claimed the decision to pull the show was meant to avoid the prospect of a guest making an inflammatory comment that could open the program or network to criticism. Scarborough, a former GOP congressman, even suggested the hosts of “Morning Joe” would quit the top-rated show if it was sidelined again.

“We were told, in no uncertain terms on Sunday evening, that there was going to be one news feed across all NBC news channels yesterday, and today’s show would be Lester Holt,” he said. “Other people that, well, you worked with on Sunday and that was going to be one news feed across all NBC news channels, that we were going to stay as a network in breaking news mode throughout, all day yesterday. That did not happen.”

Scarborough continued, “We don’t know why that was — that didn’t happen. Our team was not given a good answer as to why that didn’t happen, but it didn’t happen. We were also told it was going to happen throughout the day. And I guess, after there was such a strong blowback about yesterday morning, I guess they changed their plan. And so those plans changed as well. So it didn’t.”

The host said, “We’ve talked about it, off the air” and stressed, “We’ll talk about it on the air because we talk about everything on the air.”

“We were very surprised. We were very disappointed,” Scarborough added. “And if we had known that there wasn’t going to be the one news feed, from NBC news across all NBC news channels, Willie, we obviously would have been in yesterday morning.”

Willie Geist, another co-host of “Morning Joe,” said he was up early to help with coverage on Sunday in the aftermath of the attack on Trump and explained that he was “suited up and ready to go” for Monday’s show, but was told there would be something else airing. “We want to be here for our audience, and we know you trust us, and we have ultimate respect for you guys. So we are here today. I wish we’d been here yesterday,” he said.

After Scarborough cut in to emphasize how they would like to figure out why there was not one news feed, Brzezinski explained the reason why they wanted to be there was “this show began and continues 17 years later on being the place where you can go to have the hard conversations in a civil way and so it seemed like now more than ever is a day — a time we’d like to be on, and I think our viewers agree with that. So we continue.”

Scarborough interjected. “Let me just say, next time we’re told there’s going to be a news feed replacing us we will be in our chairs,” he said. Brzezinski agreed, saying they would be there, and Scarborough went on, “The news feed will be us or they can get somebody else to host the show.”
