President Donald Trump said during his inauguration address on Monday that he believes he was “saved by God” from a would-be assassin’s bullet last summer so he could “make America great again.”
Trump was sworn into office as the 47th president of the United States just after noon on Monday.
“Over the past eight years, I have been tested and challenged more than any president in our 250-year history, and I have learned a lot along the way. The journey to reclaim our Republic has not been an easy one, that I can tell you,” Trump said during his remarks moments after taking the oath of office.

“Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom and indeed to take my life,” the president said. “Just a few months ago in a beautiful Pennsylvania field an assassin’s bullet ripped through my ear.”
“But I felt then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump said.

At this, the crowd stood and applauded, shouting in support.
Former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and other Democrats remained seated during the applause.
Trump continued, “That is why each day under our administration of American patriots, we will be working to meet every crisis with dignity and power and strength. We will move with purpose and speed to bring back hope, prosperity, safety, and peace for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed.”
Trump narrowly missed being killed by a bullet to the head during a July campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A bullet grazed the president’s right ear. Now iconic photos from the chaotic moments afterward show Trump being whisked off the stage by Secret Service agents as blood streamed down his face and he raised his fist, shouting, “Fight!”
Just four months later, he won every swing state in a massive electoral victory that he called a “mandate” to deliver on his agenda during Monday’s remarks.
“It is my hope that the recent presidential election will be remembered as the greatest and most consequential election in the history of our country,” Trump said. “As our victory showed, the entire nation is rapidly unifying behind our agenda with dramatic increases in support from virtually every element of our society, young and old, men and women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, urban, suburban, rural, and very importantly, we had a powerful win in all seven swing states, and the popular vote we won by millions of people.”
The president promised that the “golden age” of America begins now.
“From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he said.
On Monday afternoon, Trump is set to sign a flurry of executive orders on a range of issues, from immigration to gender ideology, as some of his first moves as president.
