Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-CO), a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, cruised to victory in a crowded Republican primary on Tuesday night after switching districts to run for the seat of retired GOP Rep. Ken Buck, a Trump critic.
Boebert dominated a field of six Republican candidates in Colorado’s 4th district, taking 43% of the vote with the next highest vote-getter, former state Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, only receiving 14%. The 4th District seat was previously held by Rep. Buck, who became a target of Trump’s criticism after the congressman opposed the former president’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Buck retired from Congress in March, a development that Trump called “a great thing for the Republican Party.”
Trump celebrated Boebert’s primary win in a Truth Social post on Tuesday night, which noted that Bobert was endorsed by the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
The controversial Republican congresswoman survived a scandal after she was kicked out of a theater last year when people complained that she and her boyfriend were allegedly “vaping, singing, [and] causing a disturbance.” She also faced accusations of “carpetbagging” when she announced her run for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District while serving in the state’s 3rd District, a seat she has held since 2021.
Boebert appeared on stage at her victory party wearing a white “Make America Great Again” hat and a pair of Trump’s gold sneakers, the Associated Press reported.
“A lot of folks criticize my approach on things, but I learned very early on in Washington, D.C., that nothing happens without force,” she said.
The past six months have been a rollercoaster of headlines for Boebert. In January, Boebert’s ex-husband was arrested on charges that included alleged assault of the couple’s son, and weeks later, Boebert’s son, Tyler, was arrested on numerous felony and misdemeanor charges. Then in April, the congresswoman announced that she had been diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome, a rare condition that affects a vein in a person’s pelvis.

“We successfully performed surgery on the Congresswoman this morning and expect her to make a full recovery,” Dr. Rebecca Bade said on April 2. “Patients with May-Thurner Syndrome who undergo the procedure to restore blood flow are able to live and work just as they have in the past after a brief recovery.”
Boebert won a tight election against Democratic candidate Adam Frisch in 2022, surpassing Frisch by just 546 votes. Colorado’s 4th Congressional District is more reliably Republican than the 3rd District, giving Boebert a strong advantage in November against Democrat Trisha Calvarese, who won her party’s nomination on Tuesday night.
