The U.S. Treasury building and Hotel Washington were evacuated on Thursday morning following reports of a “suspicious package” near the White House.

NewsNation White House correspondent Libbey Dean said on X that the United States Secret Service (USSS) responded to the reports and now says the scene is “safe.”

“USSS responded to reports of a ‘suspicious package’ outside the White House today near 15th and Pennsylvania Ave NW around 9:45 this morning,” Dean posted. “The scene is now safe, but parts of the Treasury Building and the Hotel Washington were evacuated, per USSS.”

According to DC News Now, the Metropolitan Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team was also called to the scene, before the department determined the area safe, too.

The incident sparked road closures that might still be in effect, other reports indicate.
