Former President Barack Obama endorsed liberal Judge Susan Crawford on Tuesday in her race against conservative candidate Brad Schimel for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
In a statement on X endorsing Crawford, Obama claimed that the “fundamental rights” of Wisconsinites were at stake in the race. The race between Crawford and Schimel, who previously served as Wisconsin’s attorney general, will determine the ideological slant of the court, which currently leans 4-3 liberal.
“If you live in Wisconsin – or have friends or family who do – there’s an important Supreme Court race happening right now. And there’s only one candidate ready to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of Wisconsinites: Judge Susan Crawford,” Obama posted.

We’ve all seen how important…

The outcome could determine how the court is likely to rule on issues from election maps, abortion, voter ID laws, and union reform.
Wisconsin GOP Executive Director Andrew Iverson said that Obama’s endorsement of Crawford highlighted her base of support from “out-of-state liberals.”
“A vote for Susan Crawford is a vote for a Dangerously Liberal Democrat agenda,” Iverson said. “Wisconsin voters are already running up the score for Brad Schimel to protect normalcy. Schimel’s support shows he will protect hard-working Wisconsinites and put our values first. With support from over 80 Wisconsin sheriffs, to President Trump to Wisconsin farmers, sportsmen, and small business owners, Schimel is a Wisconsinite through and through.”
Trump officially endorsed Schimel last Friday, and has urged his supporters to get out and vote early for Schimel.
“In the Great State of Wisconsin, a Radical Left Democrat, one who is insistent on bringing hardened CRIMINALS, that we removed to far away places, back into our Country, allowing men into women’s sports, Open Borders, and more, is running against a strong, Common Sense Republican, JUST CALL HIM BRAD, for the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The April 1 race has already attracted a record amount of money, with leftist megadonors like George Soros stepping in to back Crawford’s campaign and Elon Musk’s America PAC running ads to support Schimel. According to reporting by WisPolitics, around $76 million has been spent on the race so far, making it the most expensive state Supreme Court race in history.
Musk’s ads have highlighted Crawford’s record of giving sex offenders much lighter sentences than allowed by statute, including one case where she sentenced a man convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls in a pool to just four years in prison, well below what prosecutors had requested and the maximum penalty that could have been imposed.
