Marvel star Jeremy Renner talked about his career following the near-fatal snow plow accident near his Nevada home — and he admitted he doesn’t have the “fuel” for “challenging” roles.
During the 53-year-old actor’s recent appearance on the “Smartless” podcast, Renner talked about the roles he took on before his accident and said that nowadays he has to use all his energy to continue healing his body. In January 2023, Renner was nearly crushed under a 14,300-pound snowcat in an accident. Over the last year, he’s undergone extensive therapy in order to recover from the accident that left him with more than 30 broken bones.
“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner said. “I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now.”
“Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can, you know, have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing,” he added.

Renner — who previously took on roles in action-packed thrillers like “Mission Impossible” movies and Marvel’s “Avenger” franchise films — recently went back to work on the hit TV series “Mayor of Kingstown” and admitted going back made him “very terrified.”
“Because I’m to do, like, f**king fiction? I’m still trying to live in reality, I’m trying to live,” Renner said. “So it was a hard line for me to cross.”
“Yeah, it was a big stretch. It was very, very challenging for me mentally to get over that hump,” he added. “To like, and I still struggle with it sometimes too, like, I don’t take it super seriously. I’m in a character that I can do very well and I know the show very well, so it was easy for me to kind of slide back into it.”
“But if it was a very challenging role, I couldn’t have taken it,” the actor continued. “Not challenging in the sense that — because the show’s challenging, but it’s if I had to go play Dahmer or something, something so far from me.”
The actor recently talked about the life-threatening injuries he sustained in the accident and said, “Not one doctor, early on, said ‘You’re gonna pull through, you’re gonna be able to see again, you’re gonna be able to walk again, you’re gonna be able to breathe right, you’re gonna be able to talk,’” The Hollywood Reporter noted.
“No one gave me anything,” he added. “I think they were all communicating with my family. And I feel like if they didn’t tell me it must have been pretty bleak.”
“The Avengers” star said when he heard there would be limitations to his recovery, it had only fueled him to get back on his feet faster.
