Los Angeles Democrat Mayor Karen Bass is facing intense criticism for being on another continent while historic wildfires burned down neighborhoods in the area.
Bass was more than 7,000 miles away visiting the African nation of Ghana when fires erupted Tuesday and quickly spread thanks to the notorious Santa Ana winds.
Bass traveled to Ghana with three others for the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama, who was elected last year.
Richard Grenell, President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, slammed Bass in a post on X: “The national media hasn’t even mentioned that Karen Bass is in Africa while our city is literally burning to the ground.”
Elon Musk also slammed Bass, saying that former President Barack Obama got her elected over a far superior candidate.
“Obama made sure that Rick Caruso, who is extremely competent, lost to utterly incompetent Mayor Karen (her real name),” Musk posted.

Real estate magnate Rick Caruso described the scenes in Southern California as “like a third-world country.”
“There is no water coming out of the fire hydrants,” he said. “LA Mayor Karen Bass is on a foreign trip to Ghana.”
The main blaze, the Palisades Fire, quickly erupted to well over 3,000 acres within hours. Three other fires erupted around L.A. County on Tuesday, including the Eaton Fire, which consumed more than 2,000 acres by Wednesday morning; the Hurst Fire in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley, which consumed more than 500 acres by Tuesday night, and the the Woodley Fire, a small fire that only burned a couple dozen acres and was quickly contained.
Well over a thousand structures were destroyed, The New York Times reported, as officials worried that the worst is still yet to come with well over 15,000 structures at risk. Approximately 300,000 people were without power on Wednesday morning.
