CNN Republican commentator Scott Jennings made it clear on Tuesday that he was not buying the White House’s attempts to clean up President Joe Biden’s remarks from earlier in the day, when he had referred to former President Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage.”

Jennings joined host Abby Phillip along with a panel of guests to discuss the fallout from Biden’s comments earlier that afternoon, and among other things, he noted that Biden had been on CNN while his vice president and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris attempted to deliver her campaign’s closing argument just outside.

“Let me just accept the most charitable framing of this, which you just gave,” Jennings began. “Why is he sitting in front of a laptop exactly at the same moment Kamala Harris is out on his backyard trying to give the closing argument to her campaign? What in the world is he doing?”

“Now, I don’t accept your framing of it personally, because I actually do believe he, Harris, the Democratic Party, and most of their campaign do believe that half the country is garbage,” Jennings continued. “They’ve also said that people who go to Trump rallies are Nazis. And so it’s pretty apparent the disdain with which they hold half of the country —”

The panel exploded as everyone tried to talk over Jennings, claiming that what he was saying just was not true.

“But as a tactical matter today,” he persisted, “Why in the world is Joe Biden giving remarks at the same time as Kamala Harris?”

Biden, when he made the comment, was reacting to a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe — which depicted Puerto Rico as an island made of garbage — at Trump’s Sunday afternoon rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is [Trump] supporters,” Biden said, and in the same breath went on to state that the “demonization” of any group of Americans was just “unconscionable.”
