Erik Prince — a former U.S. Navy SEAL who went on to found the private military company Blackwater, which now goes by Academi — wrote about what went wrong from a security perspective when a gunman shot former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Prince’s post comes after 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on the former president from a nearby rooftop, hitting Trump in the ear and killing at least one rallygoer and critically injuring two other people before he was neutralized by law enforcement.

Prince said that Trump was still alive “solely due to a bad wind estimate by an evil would-be assassin,” as a light five mph crosswind was likely enough to push the small caliber bullet off course by a couple of inches.

“DJT was not saved by USSS (United States Secret Service) brilliance,” he said. “The fact that USSS allowed a rifle-armed shooter within 150 yards to a preplanned event is either malice or massive incompetence. Clearly there was adequate uncontrolled dead space for a shooter to move into position and take multiple aimed shots. Watching the newsreel one can hear how proximate the shooter is by the very short time lapse between the crack of arriving bullet (supersonic) to the boom of muzzle blast (sonic).”

He said that based on the way counter-snipers initially reacted to the shots being fired, he believes that security had a “no ‘first shot’ policy.”

Prince said that the only positive action that was taken by Secret Service was when one of their snipers reportedly fired the shot that killed the shooter from nearly 500 yards away.

“In my old business of providing Diplomatic Security in two active war zones we were expected to execute the basics or we would be fired,” he said. “Clearly USSS failed at the basics of a secure perimeter and once shots were fired their extraction was clumsy and left DJT highly exposed to follow on attacks. It looked like they had never drilled together because those responses should be effectively autonomic. Will there be accountability? That’s not the Washington way.”

Prince said there needed to be a serious shift in the strategies for managing law enforcement departments and agencies.

“Unserious and unworthy people in positions of authority got us to this near disaster,” he said. “Merit and execution must be the only deciding factors in hiring and leadership, not the social engineering priority of the day. Sadly nothing in Washington reflects that any longer.”

“DJT is right to question the competence of those protecting him because yesterday they failed in almost every way,” he concluded. “Nature abhors a vacuum and there are always other options. Most importantly, as Americans let’s come together and run a proper valid election so we can get back to what matters a merit based society that judges on character and skill. Nothing else.”

Hopefully after the tragedy yesterday in Butler PA we can all recognize that unaccountable bloated bureaucracies continue to fail us as Americans.
