Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) signaled this week he backs President-elect Donald Trump’s push for the U.S. to acquire Greenland and to take back control of the Panama Canal.
Cruz made the remarks during an episode of his “Verdict” podcast this week with co-host Ben Ferguson while talking about Trump’s efforts to acquire both.
He said that while he believes Trump is trolling Canada by saying they should become the 51st state, he believes his remarks about Greenland “are something very different.”
“I think the United States acquiring Greenland is a very, very good idea,” he said. “To be clear, Trump talked about this in his first term in office, and at the time, a lot of people, particularly the media, dismissed it. They said, ‘Oh, it’s Trump talking. It’s just some crazy idea.’ But I’ll tell you, acquiring Greenland has enormous advantages to the United States.”
“Number one, Greenland’s location on the Arctic is incredibly important from a national security and defense perspective, if you look at the Arctic, if, God forbid, we ever get in a shooting war with Russia or China, ICBMs from Russia or China will come over the Arctic and right over where Greenland is. Greenland is situated in an incredibly important location to defend the United States of America.”
Cruz also noted that trade routes are opening up in the Arctic and that Greenland is situated perfectly for that.

“In addition, Greenland has very significant reserves of critical minerals, critical minerals that are vitally important for semiconductors, for high tech, for electronics, for defense equipment,” he added. “And so, the United States acquiring Greenland, making Greenland American territory, would have very important benefits for America from both the national security perspective.”
Acquiring Greenland has enormous advantages for the United States.
From a national security perspective, Greenland is critical for missile defense, opening trade routes, and mining critical minerals.

On the issue of the Panama Canal, Cruz noted that Trump was correct about Panama breaking the terms of the agreement that they signed when former President Jimmy Carter gave them the canal that the U.S. built and paid for.
“They are violating that agreement, and in particular that they have essentially sold significant parts of the Panama Canal to China,” Cruz said. “That Chinese companies now control both ends of the Panama Canal, and they’ve ceded control to China — that’s incredibly harmful.”
“China’s growing influence over the Panama Canal is just stupid. It is unacceptable,” he added. “And that’s leadership that, frankly, can you imagine in a billion years, Joe Biden or Kamala Harris making these points? You can’t at all because they don’t defend America.”
America built the Panama Canal, and gave it away in an egregious foreign policy mistake.
Panama is now treating America unfairly and ceding control of the canal to China.
