Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) was slammed on social media Tuesday afternoon over her explanation of why she mocked Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has been confined to a wheelchair since he was permanently disabled in his 20s when a tree fell on him.
Speaking at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles this week, Crockett mocked Abbott: “Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, C’mon now.”
“And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-a** mess, honey,” she continued.
After facing significant backlash over her remarks, Crockett attempted to explain away what she said by claiming she was not talking about his physical disability.
“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition — I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable,” she claimed. “Literally, the next line I said was that he was a ‘Hot A** Mess,’ referencing his terrible policies.”
“At no point did I mention or allude to his condition,” she continued. “So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump — a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities — are now outraged.”
She claimed that all the attention that has been focused on her in recent weeks over her highly inflammatory remarks — some of which have been construed by critics as calls for violence — were just “another distraction.”
“Instead of obsessing over and hanging on to my every word, maybe my political foes should focus on doing the work of the people who elected us to improve their lives,” she said.
People online quickly pointed out that her claim that she was not talking about Abbott’s disability was likely false given that she had recently reposted content from a critic of Abbott that specifically made mention of his wheelchair.
The post in question showed Abbott at the White House in his wheelchair attending an event last week where the president signed an executive order starting the dismantlement of the Department of Education.
“Rolling up to the White House to cheer on the president destroying the agency that makes sure kids in wheelchairs have equal access to education is wild,” the post said.
Crockett reposted and “liked” the post, according to screenshots shared by the original poster.

Abbott was studying for the bar exam at the age of 26 in 1984 when he took a break to go jogging.
As he ran, a large oak tree along his path cracked and fell on his back, leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
“Doctors discovered several crushed vertebrae splintering into his spinal cord, broken ribs, and damage to vital organs,” Abbott says on his website.
