President Joe Biden is slated to sit down on Friday for his first TV interview since a shaky debate performance last week rocked the confidence many Democrats have in his effort to beat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
ABC News announced on Tuesday that Biden will speak with “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos, who previously served as a communications director under former President Bill Clinton, one day after the July 4 holiday.
The network said a “first look” will appear on the Friday edition of “World News Tonight with David Muir” — which airs at 6:30 p.m. ET — and portions of the interview will air on Saturday and Sunday on “Good Morning America.”
Viewers will have to wait for Sunday’s broadcast of “This Week” on Sunday for the “extended” interview to air. It will be shown again on Monday’s episode of “Good Morning America,” ABC News added in a story posted on its website.
Many Democrats are panicking about the election and there is growing pressure on Biden to drop out, including from donors and at least one member of Congress, and give the party the chance to rally behind an alternative nominee.
Polling from CBS News and YouGov after Biden’s halting debate presentation found that 41% of Democratic registered voters and 72% of registered voters overall do not believe Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president.

House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said during an appearance on MSNBC earlier on Tuesday that Biden should agree to interviews with “serious journalists” to tackle the crisis of confidence that he is facing within his party.
“Show your values, show your knowledge, show your judgment, show your empathy for the American people,” Pelosi added. “I think that that would be a great thing for him. Not one, maybe two. A couple of those. I think that is essential.”
News of the interview drew some mockery and skeptical reactions on social media.
“To alleviate concerns about his mental capacity, Biden is going for a taped interview with a professional Democrat. Should clear things up! Sharp as a tack!” National Review Online editor Philip Klein quipped in a post to X.
“Wise comms professional notes that aside from this Biden ‘interview’ being conducted by noted Dem operative George Stephanopoulos, it’s not even being aired live, so it can be edited, sliced, and diced to help Biden,” said The Federalist editor-in-chief Mollie Hemingway.
