Vice President JD Vance met briefly with Pope Francis in Vatican City on Easter Sunday as the supreme pontiff recovers from a severe bout of pneumonia.

Vance traveled to Rome ahead of Easter to meet with top Italian officials including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. Vance, who is Catholic, was able to meet with the pope as well as Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the top diplomat for the Holy See, during the trip.

The vice president met with Francis briefly; the Vance motorcade was on Vatican property for less than 20 minutes, according to the Associated Press. During the meeting, the pope presented Vance with gifts, including a Vatican tie, rosaries, and three chocolate Easter eggs for his children.

The Vatican said that a “cordial conversation took place” between Vance and Francis on “the common commitment to protect the right to religious freedom and freedom of conscience.” The two also discussed “the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention focused on migrants, refugees and those in prison.”

The meeting underpins what the White House has said is the Trump administration’s strong support for Catholicism and Catholics. Vance said in a speech to the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in February that President Donald Trump, while not a Catholic, “has been an incredibly good president for Catholics in the United States of America.”

Vance and the pope met after the Holy See and the Trump administration exchanged barbs over immigration policy earlier this year. In February, Francis wrote a letter to bishops in the United States expressing concern over U.S. deportation policies.

“I have followed closely the major crisis that is taking place in the United States with the initiation of a program of mass deportations. The rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality,” Francis wrote.

The letter came after Vance had floated the idea of “ordo amoris,” or “order of love” in Latin, to justify the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

“You love your family, and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country, and then, after that, you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world,” Vance said in an interview with Fox News.

A top Republican in Congress rejected on Sunday CNN anchor Dana Bash’s assertion that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant deported from the United States and sent to prison in his home country of El Salvador, has been robbed of due process.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) shot back after Bash began an interview on “State of the Union” by pressing the lawmaker on the case of Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old living in Maryland who was sent back to El Salvador last month despite a 2019 court order prohibiting him from being sent back to the country.

“I want to start with what the core issue is here. And that is the fact that the administration detained and deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia without any due process, violated a judge’s deportation protection order, refused to provide evidence in court to back up its allegations. Does that concern you?” Bash asked.

“Actually, if you look at this, it’s very interesting when people talk about the fact that this illegal alien, who is not a resident of the U.S. — he is a citizen of El Salvador — actually did have due process in an asylum hearing, where his request for asylum was rejected,” Emmer said, noting how Abrego Garcia was granted protection from being returned to El Salvador in 2019 due to concerns about local gangs endangering him, but not asylum.

“The Trump administration, as part of the promise that they made during the campaign, President Trump made it very clear, I’m going to get rid of the gang members, the murderers, the rapists, the terrorists. And this is part of that process in keeping that campaign promise. And I think they’re doing a good job at it,” Emmer said.

Emmer was alluding to how the Trump administration accuses Abrego Garcia of being a member of MS-13, which has been designated as a foreign terror organization, and has released documents to substantiate the affiliation. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys deny the claim.

“There’s no evidence that was provided because there was no hearing in which to do so that he is either a murderer or a criminal or a gang member,” Bash replied. “Isn’t that something that should be provided to a judge, even an immigration judge, before somebody who has been in this country illegally, no question, but has been in this country and has appeared before judges before should be afforded?”

Emmer responded, “Actually, I think he was afforded that due process. In this case, an illegal alien was transported back to El Salvador. The administration initially thought it was a mistake, subsequently says it was not a mistake. The courts, interestingly, have suggested that we need to understand what ‘facilitate’ means in the order. So they have deferred back to the lower court, Dana, to tell the administration, ‘facilitate’ means this. And what’s going on in El Salvador now is, you have a citizen of El Salvador that is within the country of El Salvador. It really isn’t the U.S.’ ability to go in and remove someone. It’ll be up to the president of El Salvador.”

Bash later read from a federal appeals court order refusing to stop a judge’s demand for Trump administration officials to testify on whether they are making an effort to “facilitate” getting Garcia back, saying, “The government is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order … This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear.”

Asked for his response, Emmer said, “Yes, and it’s been referred to the lower court to interpret what ‘facilitate’ means. Dana, you make it — you want to make it about a much bigger thing. This is isolated incidents like the order that was issued after midnight this morning saying that they’re going to delay some deportations so that the lower court process can continue. These will happen on a case-by-case basis. And, again, the administration is absolutely following the law. I see nothing that they have done that’s illegal. Certainly, judges may disagree here and there, but the Supreme Court has been pretty good about supporting what this administration is doing legally.”

The missive featured references to illegal immigration, judicial lawfare, the 2020 election, and former President Joe Biden’s controversial use of an autopen to sign official documents.

“Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting and scheming so hard to bring Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well known MS-13 Gang Members and Wife Beaters, back into our Country,” Trump said.

“Happy Easter also to the WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Judges and Law Enforcement Officials who are allowing this sinister attack on our Nation to continue, an attack so violent that it will never be forgotten! Sleepy Joe Biden purposefully allowed Millions of CRIMINALS to enter our Country, totally unvetted and unchecked, through an Open Borders Policy that will go down in history as the single most calamitous act ever perpetrated upon America,” Trump continued.

On Sunday, Trump border czar Tom Homan condemned Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) for making a taxpayer funded trip to El Salvador to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant who was deported from the United States last month.

Homan redirected a question from ABC’s “This Week” by anchor Jonathan Karl when pressed about Abrego Garcia, who has been imprisoned in El Salvador, his home country. Abrego Garcia’s legal team has been fighting the federal government in a high-profile court to secure his return to the United States. Van Hollen, who claims Abrego Garcia is a Maryland “constituent” who endured an “abduction and unlawful deportation,” met the man on Thursday.

“Sen. Van Hollen is — obviously got a chance to meet with [Abrego Garcia], but he had to travel to El Salvador to get any information. Is (sic) that concern you at all? I mean, these are people sent by — I mean, in his case, sent by the United States, and not even a U.S. senator could get any information about his whereabouts, or the condition of his incarceration, without actually going down and making the trip to El Salvador himself?” Karl asked.

“Well, he obviously knew his whereabouts, because he went there to see him. But you know, what bothers me more than that is a U.S. senator traveled to El Salvador on taxpayer dime to meet with an MS-13 gang member, public safety threat, terrorist. I mean, in the meantime, the day before he traveled, an illegal alien was arrested for murder, was released to the streets rather than honoring an ICE detainer in his very own state,” Homan retorted.

The Trump administration accuses Abrego Garcia of being a member of MS-13, which has been designated as a foreign terror organization, and has released documents and photo evidence to substantiate the affiliation. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys deny the claim.

On CNN, Van Hollen dared the Trump administration to bring up the gang affiliation claim in Abrego Garcia’s ongoing deportation case. The senator also conceded during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” that his trip to El Salvador was funded by taxpayer dollars.

Homan went on to criticize Van Hollen over the border crisis during President Joe Biden’s administration.

“What concerns me is Van Hollen never went to the border the last four years under Joe Biden, when he had a 600% increase in sex trafficking in women and children,” Homan said. “You have a record number of known inspected terrorists crossing that border. You had a quarter of a million Americans die from fentanyl overdose because of the open border. You had over 4,000 illegal aliens died making that journey, which is an historic record. What shocks me is he’s remained silent on the travesty that happened on the southern border. Many people died, thousands of people died. I met with hundreds of Angel moms and dads who buried their children that were murdered by illegal aliens. How many Angel moms and dads has he met in the state of Maryland? That’s what concerns me.”

Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Van Hollen and other Democrats who have rallied in support of Abrego Garcia during a press briefing alongside Patty Morin, whose daughter, Rachel, 37, was raped and murdered in Maryland two years ago by another illegal immigrant from El Salvador.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) criticized President Donald Trump on Thursday after he called for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates – seven months after Warren told the Federal Reserve the same.

Warren appeared on CNBC on Thursday and said that Trump was risking a market “crash” after he posted on Truth Social that the Federal Reserve chairman’s “termination cannot come fast enough!” Trump has expressed frustration with the Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, in recent days over the level of the federal funds rate.

Warren said that Trump’s post was a threat to fire Powell. As an independent agency, the Federal Reserve’s chairman can only be removed by the president “for cause,” according to a 1935 Supreme Court ruling. “For cause” is typically interpreted to exclude disagreements over monetary policy.

“Understand this: if Chairman Powell can be fired by the president of the United States, it will crash the markets in the United States,” Warren said. “The infrastructure that keeps this stock market strong – and therefore a big part of our economy strong, and therefore a big part of the world economy strong – is the idea that the big pieces move independent of the politics, that somebody is making his/their/her best decisions economically and independently.”

“If interest rates in the United States are subject to a president who just wants to wave his magic wand, this doesn’t distinguish us then from any other two bit dictatorship around the world,” she added.

Under the Biden administration, Warren, now the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, repeatedly pushed Powell to cut interest rates despite high levels of inflation. She argued that interest rates needed to come down to make housing more affordable.

In one of those letters sent in September, Warren pushed the Federal Reserve to cut the federal funds rate by “75 basis points.” “If the Fed is too cautious in cutting rates, it would needlessly risk our economy heading towards a recession,” the letter said.

Trump on Thursday appeared to vent in a Truth Social post about the federal funds rate, which is set by the Federal Open Market Committee and influences other interest rates. The president suggested that Powell was acting late to cut rates as the European Central Bank prepares to cut its own interest rates.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said on Sunday he did not bother to press Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant deported from the United States and sent to prison in his home country of El Salvador, to answer whether he is or has ever been a member of MS-13 when the two met last week.

The Democrat, who contends that Abrego Garcia is a “constituent” of Maryland who was unlawfully deported, told CNN’s Dana Bash he did not ask “because I know what his answer is: what he told me was he was sad and traumatized that he was being in prison because he has committed no crimes, and that goes to the heart of this issue because he’s being denied his due process rights.”

Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old living in Maryland, was detained and deported to El Salvador last month despite a 2019 court order prohibiting him from being sent back to the country. His legal team has been fighting the federal government in a high-profile court to secure his return to the United States.

The Trump administration accuses Abrego Garcia of being a member of MS-13, which has been designated as a foreign terror organization, and has released documents to substantiate the affiliation. Among them was a 2019 interview sheet in which police wrote that a confidential informant identified Abrego Garcia as a member of the gang. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys deny the claim.

After Van Hollen met with Abrego Garcia on Thursday, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele posted photos of the encounter on X. One photo showed there were tattoos on the knuckles of Abrego Garcia’s left hand, a possible sign of gang membership.

President Donald Trump then posted on social media a photo of himself holding a photo of a hand. It was titled “Kilmar Abrego Garcia MS-13 Tattoo” and showed a close-up picture of a hand with a cannabis leaf, smiley face, cross, and skull tattooed across four knuckles. In his post, Trump alluded to the 2019 immigration case and a 2021 restraining order that shows Abrego Garcia was accused of beating his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, who now says they worked through the incident.

“This is the hand of the man that the Democrats feel should be brought back to the United States, because he is such ‘a fine and innocent person.’ They said he is not a member of MS-13, even though he’s got MS-13 tattooed onto his knuckles, and two Highly Respected Courts found that he was a member of MS-13, beat up his wife, etc. I was elected to take bad people out of the United States, among other things. Van Hollen insisted that the president is trying to distract people and dared the Trump administration to bring up the gang affiliation claim in Abrego Garcia’s ongoing deportation case.

“He and his administration are defying a court order to give Abrego Garcia his due process rights. They are trying to litigate on social media what they should be doing in the courts they need to put up or shut up in the courts,” Van Hollen said. “Let me tell you, I decided to write this down so I could be absolutely accurate as to what federal district Court Judge Zennis said about these allegations by the Trump administration, quote, ‘No evidence linking Abrego Garcia to MS-13 or any terrorist activity has been presented to the court.’ That’s where to litigate this. It’s been litigated in many other places, so I’m not going to get into the details because the whole purpose of our court system is for them to adjudicate these things, not for Donald Trump to go off on social media.”

MSNBC anchor Symone Sanders claimed on Saturday that the deportation of Salvadoran citizen and suspected MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego-Garcia was just one step on the road toward President Donald Trump’s administration deporting black American citizens.

Sanders began with an article written for The Nation earlier in the week — in which the author had suggested the deportation of criminal aliens, designated terrorists, and gang members effectively heralded the fall of democracy in the United States — and argued that “people of color and vulnerable communities … are next in line.”

“We’ve been talking about this all week, but Janai Nelson of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, she penned an op-ed in The Nation this week,” Sanders began. “And her op-ed talked about that we think democracies are — the way they die is dramatically, through these wars, and blood is shed, and it’s cinematic in a sense. But really, the realistic way in which democracies die, is it is dismantled brick by brick, piece by piece.”

“And she says that what we are seeing now with the lawlessness from this administration are really the canaries in the coal mine gasping for air,” Sanders continued. “I’m paraphrasing here. But to me, that is why Kilmar Abrego-Garcia’s specific case, the case of the gentleman who’s a make-up artist out of California who was also sent to that prison, that’s what the more — the 75% of the folks who have been sent, the men who have been sent there that don’t have criminal records — that is why this is so important.”

Sanders then pivoted to suggest that if illegal immigrants could be deported, it would not be long before citizens could also be deported.

“If they can do it to them, if they can snatch students off the street without any pushback or recourse, they will do it to any of us,” she declared. “To be very clear, it’s going to be the people of color, and vulnerable communities that are next in line.”

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) agreed with Sanders’ assessment, saying that was why the black community appeared largely supportive of bringing Abrego-Garcia back to the United States.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced this past week that he’s commissioning a series of studies to investigate potential environmental causes for autism, and underscored how the rate of autism, including severe autism, is continuing to increase.

Speaking specifically of severe cases of autism, RFK Jr. noted that some children may never grow up to play baseball or even use the bathroom by themselves.

Some Democrat politicians, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, criticized Kennedy for allegedly standing against people with autism. RFK, however, was met with support from family members of Americans who suffer from severe autism.

“I am not an RFK jr. fan but he just described children with what some would call ‘profound’ or ‘severe’ autism at a press conference and I have already seen so much pushback about how ‘their kid who has autism isn’t like that’ and like……….congratulations???? mine is,” one X user posted.

“For my daughter, autism is not a super power. It makes her life very difficult. She struggles to communicate her needs, it’s hard for her to participate in things with other children. I am not a conspiracy theorist, I am not anti vax, and ‘love on the spectrum’ is not my life,” she continued. “Like on one side you have people telling you that your kid’s disability essentially isn’t that big of a deal and on another they’re saying, ‘We believe you.’ Even if I disagree with their conclusions, they have empathy for me. For my child.”

Another social media user commented, “As the mother of a daughter with severe autism, mild mental retardation and an intellectual delay, I resent your disdain for Secretary Kennedy’s efforts to research the increasing numbers of autism in America. My daughter was diagnosed over 20 years ago and he is the first Secretary of HHS to show concern for the autistic community. You may not like his choice of words, but his actions are commendable.”

Another person shared a photo of her 9-year-old son who has severe autism and is “non-speaking.” “He has also had extensive genetic testing and they’ve found nothing not one mutation or gene that points to autism,” she wrote. “I’m glad these folks talking about my son has autism and pays taxes are good, but we’re not. We need all the help we can get because my son will never pay taxes, graduate, have a girlfriend, get married, or even have privacy using the toilet.”

“So if you could please sit down and shut up and let RFK try to help us,” she added. “He’s not talking about you!”

“The ignorance [surrounding] severe autism is actually mind boggling,” another comment said. “My nephew is severely autistic. He is in his 20s, but mentally is 8. He won’t ever be able to work. He won’t ever be able to be in a relationship. He has violent outbursts often. He has to be with my brother-in-law at all times. He does not have any other diagnosis other than severe autism.”

“Pretending people like him don’t exist in the world just because RFK said they did is literally insane,” the person added.

Kennedy said this past week that mold, pesticides, other food chemicals, and medicines could be potential toxins contributing to the autism epidemic. He also suggested ultrasound scans could be a factor, given the timing of such technological advances.

“This is a preventable disease,” he said. “We know it’s environmental exposure. It has to be. Genes do not cause epidemics. It can provide a vulnerability, but you need an environmental toxin.”

“We’re going to announce a series of new studies to identify precisely what the environmental toxins are that are causing it,” the secretary added. “This has not been done before. And we’re going to do it in a thorough and comprehensive way, and we’re gonna get back with an answer to the American people very, very quickly.”

Kennedy also revealed that 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study. About 25%, he added, have “severe autism.”

Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD) is playing defense after his photo-op with an illegal immigrant and alleged MS-13 gang member didn’t go as planned.

As highlighted by The Daily Wire, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele mocked Van Hollen’s meeting with migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was sent to an El Salvador prison by the Trump administration.

“Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously risen from the ‘death camps’ & ‘torture’, now sipping margaritas with Sen. Van Hollen in the tropical paradise of El Salvador!” Bukele said, adding a tropical drink emoji to the post.

Responding to the mockery, Van Hollen claims he didn’t sip “any margaritas or sugar water or whatever it is” when he met with Garcia, despite the glasses being put on the table. Notably, it was Van Hollen’s office that provided some photos of the meeting to the media.

“Let me just be very clear, neither of us touched the drinks that were in front of us,” the Democrat said, according to Fox News. “And if you want to play a little Sherlock Holmes, I’ll tell you how you can know that. … If you sip out of one of those glasses, some of whatever it was — salt or sugar — would disappear. You would see a gap. There’s no gap.”

“Nobody drank any margaritas or sugar water or whatever it is,” he emphasized.

Van Hollen then turned his attention to Bukele and President Donald Trump, seemingly blaming them for the spoiled photo-op.

“This is a lesson into the lengths that President Bukele will do to deceive people,” he said. “And it also shows the lengths that the Trump administration and the president will go to, because when he was asked by a reporter about this, he just went along for the ride.”

Trump reacted Friday on X to Democrats and their allies in the media defending Garcia, who has a history of allegedly beating his wife in addition to alleged MS-13 ties.

“This is the hand of the man that the Democrats feel should be brought back to the United States, because he is such ‘a fine and innocent person,’” Trump wrote. “They said he is not a member of MS-13, even though he’s got MS-13 tattooed onto his knuckles, and two Highly Respected Courts found that he was a member of MS-13, beat up his wife, etc. I was elected to take bad people out of the United States, among other things. I must be allowed to do my job. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The White House also chimed in, telling Sen. Van Hollen that Garcia is “NOT coming back” to the United States.

The United States Supreme Court early Saturday morning blocked President Donald Trump from deporting illegal Venezuelan immigrants who are suspected of being in the brutal gang Tren de Aragua.

Trump promised during his campaign to deport criminal illegal aliens, and has invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to help fulfill that promise. The high court, though, sided with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), arguing that the administration did not give the suspected gang members proper notice.

“Without this Court’s intervention, dozens or hundreds of proposed class members may be removed to a possible life sentence in El Salvador with no real opportunity to contest their designation or removal,” the suit from the ACLU said.

“The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court,” the court wrote.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito were the only two judges to dissent from the majority opinion.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump could use the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged gang members, but said potential deportees must be given a chance to challenge such removal.

The ACLU claims the illegals, who are being detained in Texas, were given notices about their deportation in English, despite one detainee only speaking Spanish, according to a BBC report. The challenge also said the suspected gang members hadn’t been told about their right to contest the decision in court.

The Trump administration says it has already deported 137 suspected Tren de Aragua gang members under the Alien Enemies Act.

The Supreme Court ruled on April 7 that Trump could use the act for such deportations, if he gives proper notice. The case landed at 5-4, with all but Justice Amy Coney Barrett from the court’s conservative wing ruling in the majority. Barrett partially dissented from the majority. The court’s three liberal justices dissented together, according to The New York Times.

The order reversed a lower court ruling from U.S. District Judge James Boasberg. Boasberg temporarily blocked the Trump administration from enforcing the Alien Enemies Act in a case involving five Venezuelan nationals, as well as on anyone else who may be affected.
