Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said that the United States is becoming “one of the worst countries” in the world after President Donald Trump and Republican governors deployed the National Guard to quell anti-ICE riots.

Speaking to the leftist news program “Democracy Now,” Omar — who grew up in Somalia during a time of anarchy — said that she doesn’t “remember ever witnessing anything like” what she sees in the United States.

“To have democracy, a beacon of hope for the world, to now be turned into one of the worst countries, where the military are in our streets without any regard for people’s constitutional rights, while our president is spending millions of dollars propping himself up like a failed dictator with a military parade, it is really shocking and it should be a wake-up call for all Americans to say this is not the country we were born in, and this is not the country we believe in.”

“This is not the country our Founding Fathers imagined, and this is not the country that is supported by our Constitution, our ideals, our values, and we should all collectively be out in the streets rejecting what is taking place this week,” Omar added.

Omar and her family fled Somalia in 1995 as the country descended into chaos and a civil war. They received asylum in the United States, living in Arlington, Virginia, before settling in Minneapolis, where Omar now represents Minnesota’s 5th District in Congress. The 5th District is in the middle of Minneapolis, which is sometimes referred to as “Little Mogadishu,” or the “Somali capital of America.”

The leftist “Squad” member has regularly criticized the United States, while radical Islamic terrorists continue to threaten innocent people in Somalia. In 2019, Omar said that after living in America, she viewed the nation as unjust, accusing the country of breaking its “promise” to her family.

“I grew up in an extremely unjust society, and the only thing that made my family excited about coming to the United States was that the United States was supposed to be the country that guaranteed justice to all,” she told high school students, according to The Washington Post. “So, I feel it necessary for me to speak about that promise that’s not kept.”

In 2021, Omar equated the United States and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban, writing, “We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.”
