Some civilians living in Gaza say they’re in favor of relocating to more habitable locations outside of the Gaza Strip, in line with President Donald Trump’s proposed plan, according to video of interviews from inside the war-ravaged region.
“It is our right in Gaza to have freedom of movement and travel,” said a 22-year-old law student, her face blurred for safety, during an interview obtained by The Daily Wire. “In light of the suffering by the people of Gaza, the need to travel has become urgent, as it is no longer suitable for living a dignified life as other people live.”
“We want to feel safe and secure — to feel stability and live a normal life,” the female student said, adding that even with the ceasefire, the situation is still dire.
Trump has repeatedly discussed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza since announcing his plans during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this month. Trump, who has described Gaza as “unlivable” and a “demolition site,” said Gazans should move to new permanent communities in Arab countries where they may have a chance at a more peaceful life.
Trump said the United States would be responsible for dismantling unexploded bombs and other weapons, demolishing and leveling destroyed buildings, and creating an economic development zone that would “supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”
The student added that she feels as if Trump has stopped talking about his plan which has caused “great frustration.”
“We don’t know if Trump has backed down or abandoned the idea,” she said. “The world forgot us in this situation where there is neither war nor peace.”
She added that Hamas refusing to hand over governance “terrifies” her and other Gazans because the terror group may cause the war to resume, and “with it, the fear of death.”
“We are just civilians,” she said. “We are not part of Hamas and we don’t want to die.”
Another interviewee, a male with his face also blurred, said he’s in favor of emigrating, as long as he can return to Gaza.
“That’s how most people in Gaza feel — because right now Gaza is uninhabitable,” he said. “Some areas are nearly destroyed, others are completely destroyed.”
Trump said he envisions the “world’s people” living in Gaza, including some Palestinians, after it is rebuilt, but most would live elsewhere permanently.
“I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable and I think representatives from all over the world will be there,” he said.
Trump added that Gaza could become the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
The man added that he thinks countries that have backed Hamas, such as Qatar and Turkey, should take responsibility for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and take in the sick as patients.
“If there is voluntary migration as they say, I don’t think Hamas will be able to do anything about those who want to go because it’s their free choice as human beings,” he said. “The decision to go to war was a unilateral selfish decision by Hamas. The people of Gaza, like any people in the world, want to live in peace and tranquility without the torments and woes of war.”
In a second video, the same man said that Hamas has been accusing those who wish to move of treason.
“This only increases the tragedy Gazans are currently facing,” he said. “Anyone who wants to move elsewhere should be free to do so. No entity should stop people from migrating.”
Joseph Braude, the founder and president of the Center for Peace Communications, told The Daily Wire that the Gazans interviewed support Trump’s call to “open the border so they can pursue a better life free of war and destruction.”
“Gazans are being trapped by Hamas in unlivable and dangerous conditions,” Braude said. “It is unconscionable for anyone to ignore the desperate pleas of the men, women, and children who want to voluntarily leave Gaza to find a better life for their families.”
He added that if the border were to be opened, the “world would see a mass exodus comparable to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Braude’s team has been interviewing Gazans about their situation for three years.
During the recent war, Braude found that interviewees feel safer when there is active fighting because “the active Hamas fighters are underground in their tunnels” and not patrolling the streets.
The Center for Peace Communications works to highlight the voices of Gazan civilians who often are not heard. In 2023, the center released the ‘Whispered in Gaza’ series which features animated interviews with residents of Gaza who detailed the horror of living under Hamas rule. In response, the Islamic Fatwa Council, a clerical body in Iraq, issued a fatwa condemning Hamas’ repression of Gazans.
In more recent interviews, the organization has moved away from animation and toward using the footage of the interviewees with their faces blurred.
Hamas, the terrorist organization that raped, murdered, and kidnapped over a thousand Israeli civilians on October 7, called Trump’s proposal for the United States to take over Gaza a “crime against humanity.”
“What President Trump stated about his intention to displace the residents of the Gaza Strip outside it and the United States’ control over the Strip by force is a crime against humanity,” a senior Hamas official told Fox News.
