Band members of the music group Village People announced on Monday that they have accepted an invitation from President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign to be part of the Inauguration activities.

In a message on the group’s Facebook page— directed to Village People fans and the media — it said that the group would be participating in several inaugural activities for the president-elect, which will includes performing at one of Trump’s inaugural balls and a rally being held in Washington, D.C. ahead of his swearing in, the Associated Press noted.

“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear, however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” the message read.  “Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.”

“Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump,” the statement added.

The news of the group’s involvement followed an announcement earlier in the day that country superstar Carrie Underwood would be singing “America the Beautiful” at Trump’s second inauguration, as previously reported.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement to the AP. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

In December, the founder of the Village People, Victor Wills, hinted that performing at the inauguration was something the band would have to consider if asked after Trump danced to their hit “Y.M.C.A.” at his campaign rallies, which led supporters to make videos of themselves doing the dance. The dance quickly became a viral sensation that others, including famous athletes, joined in doing at sporting events, as previously reported. It also helped the 1978 song skyrocket to the top of the Billboard charts, 46 years later.

“If you were to ask me today if the Village People would perform at the inauguration, I would probably say not, because we’d be concerned about endorsement,” Willis said.

“But however … because the president-elect has done so much for ‘Y.M.C.A.’ and brought so much joy to so many people, the song has actually gone back to No. 1, and it’s still No. 1 today, so if he were to ask the Village People to perform the song live for him, we’d have to seriously consider it,” he added, at the time.
