Incoming President Donald Trump has won millions in a defamation lawsuit against ABC News and veteran anchor George Stephanopoulos, who repeatedly stated on-air that Trump was found “liable for rape” despite that not being the case.
Stephanopoulos made the remark nearly a dozen times while interviewing Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who says she’s been a victim of rape herself.
Court documents show that a settlement between Trump and ABC include the network paying $15 million to the president-elect as a charitable contribution to a “Presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for Plaintiff, as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past,” Fox News reported. The network will also have to fork over $1 million for Trump’s attorney fees.
Additionally, Stephanopoulos and ABC News will issue statements of “regret” about the anchor’s repeated lie about Trump, Fox noted. The statement reads as follows: “ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week on March 10, 2024.”
During the interview with Mace, Stephanopoulos said ten times that Trump was liable for rape, though a federal jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse against controversial journalist E. Jean Carroll.
In 2019, Carroll discussed the “sexy” connotation of rape and rape fantasies on-air during a CNN interview with “360” host Anderson Cooper, who quickly threw to commercial.

“I wasn’t thrown on the ground and ravished,” Carroll said on-air. “Which, the word rape has so many sexual connotations. This was not — this was not sexual. It just, it hurt,” she claimed, before adding, “I think most people think of rape as being sexy.”

Additionally drawing attention, Carroll joked about a spending spree with the judgement money she was awarded.
Rachel Maddow asks E. Jean Carroll what she’s going to do with “Trump’s money” to help “women’s rights.”
Carroll says she and Maddow will “go shopping, get completely new wardrobes, new shoes…Rachel, what do you want, penthouse?”

Trump has denied the allegations made by Carroll and was never criminally charged.
