Hall of Famer Randy Moss will take an extended leave from his analyst role on “Sunday NFL Countdown” after he revealed that he’s dealing with some kind of health battle.
“Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss will step away from ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ for an extended time to focus on a personal health challenge,” a statement from ESPN on Friday read.
“He [Moss] briefly addressed the matter at the start of the show on Dec. 1,” it added. “For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating Countdown with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready.”
Several days ago, the former Minnesota Vikings standout asked fans to pray for him and his family as he’s dealing with a health issue, without explaining further.
“Throughout the week of the holidays, your boy has been battling something internal,” Moss said in a video he shared on Instagram.
“I just ask for all the prayer warriors to put their blessing hands on me and my family through these hard times,” he added. “I’m battling something, man, and it’s something internal. Your boy is going to get through it. I got a great team of doctors and I got a great family around me.”
His post also encouraged his male followers to get their health “checkups” and mentioned to get their “blood work done.” He closed out the video saying, “We will work through it, alright. God Bless you all. Thanks for the prayers…”

Following his announcement, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said, “I just want to, on behalf of the whole Minnesota Vikings organization, just send him our well wishes and support. We love Randy and I know our fanbase feels the same way. Just want to let him know that we’re here for him … and we always got his back. So, just well-wishes and support to him.”
Former NFL QB Robert Griffiin III took to X and wrote, “Prayers up for Randy Moss Not just a legendary player. He helped me get my first gig on Monday Night Countdown by including me in a ‘You Got Mossed’ segment when I wasn’t a part of the show. His kindness and open arms helped a brother out and is rare in any industry. Love him.”
Moss played in the NFL for 14 seasons as part of the Vikings, formerly Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and San Francisco 49ers, ESPN noted. During his career, he had 156 touchdowns and 982 career catches for 15,292 yards.
He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
