Vice President Kamala Harris defended President Joe Biden on Wednesday after the president insulted tens of millions of Trump supporters by referring to them as “garbage.”
Harris responded to the controversy while talking with reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews.
“Listen, I think, first of all, he clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” she said. “You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout my career. I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people whether they support me or not.”
Harris did not directly answer a question when she was asked if she was concerned about the impact that Biden’s remarks might have on voters.
She also did not answer a question about whether she sympathized with any voters who were “offended or insulted” by Biden’s remarks.

During a campaign call with a Latino voter outreach group on Tuesday night, Biden was responding to remarks that an insult comedian made at a Trump rally over the weekend.
“Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage,” Biden continued, referencing remarks that were made at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in New York City.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
Biden then lied about the incident in a post on social media as he tried to contain the fallout from his remarks.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden claimed in a post on X. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable.”
“That’s all I meant to say,” he continued. “The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
