I was asked my opinion of the SOTU last night, so I will just make a brief post here expressing it.
When the cameras first honed inn on him, I was shocked by how arrogantly he was sitting there, with his chin upraised and that haughty look in his eyes. My initial thought was "omg, how friggin arrogant he is"!
He sure is a great speaker. Definately hypnotizing. It all sounded so eloquent that it becomes mesmerizing. Like always, after he speaks I take a moment to shake my head and ponder what it is he said exactly.
Initially I was flabbergasted to hear him speak of nuclear energy, offshore drilling, business tax breaks and incentives...but after reflection realizing that he has laid no precedent for any of these things...in fact, he has worked hard against all these things. Obviously this was nothing more than platitudes regurgitated up for the sole purpose of trying to placate the Independents.
After trying to paint himself out as our singular salvation and last hope, he then used what he deems the magic of his magnetic personality to lay guilt upon anyone that would have the audacity to impede him. Then, without surprise, he segueyed back to his original liberal agenda that got him in trouble in the first place as he forcefully declared he was determined to get health care and cap and trade. I actually laughed out loud as I watched him lay the groundwork of Obama the Martyr...willing to sacrifice himself on the political altar to 'do the right thing'. Gosh...isn't his noblesse humbling?
Two highlights stick out in my mind. I thought it was in extremely bad taste to admonish the Supreme Court in this public forum. They turned out to support him, or at least out of respect for his office, and he lashed out against them. Tsk Tsk...he lacks a lot of social graces it would seem.
Secondly, I could not help but chuckle when he continued to try and foist Cap and Trade upon us, advising us that irrespective of the evidence against global climate change that we "might" have heard, it is only the right thing for us to do anyways.
Bottom line is that he yakked for 60 minutes like he was pivoting to the middle, then in the last 10 minutes he exposed all of that for what it was (mere placating hyperbole) and went right back to his far-left agenda. Amazing!
As I said in an article I wrote in Sept of '08...."Obama cannot resist his fetish for over-reaching to the far left". I never for one moment thought that he would all of a sudden become more centered. In the final analysis I think he further eroded his Progressive liberal base and only created greater resistance to his agenda. He did this by making some Centrist noise and by admonishing the Conservatives that did not partner with him and his agenda.
He may get a brief bump in his approval ratings, because he is so charismatic and eloquent a speaker....but as it plays out in politics and policy, I think all he accomplished is to further sink his own ship. I am delighted!
